Second phase of the Project (2007 - 2010)

In the last years, the biotechnology has become an important tool that can contribute significantly to the development, especially in a country like Perú, wich has an important part of the base material for the evolution of this technology: biodiversity and their genetic resources.

However, in the recent years –not only in Perú but around the world – have been documented multiple cases in wich it has access on a questionable, irregular, illegal or openly way to genetic resources, that are appropiate then directly or indirectly, sometimes through the IP system and other times trough direct physical control. The evidence is abundant in this subject both nationally and regional.

General objective

Through the institutional collaboration and pro-active coordination whit public and private institutions, undertake and strengthen action oriented research activities aiemd at developing and implementing an appropriate framework and well founded public policies and legislation on acces to genetic resources, protection of traditional kwoledge and prevention of biopiracy.

Specific Objectives
  1. Provide to the national authorities and indigenous groups, appropriate tools to identify when and under what circumstances is being done misuse of genetic resources and tradicional knowledege and, especially, to confront and prevent the occurrence of biopiracy.
  2. Carry out research oriented to collaborative and multidisciplinary actions, in the prevention of biopiracy and related topics at national, regional and international levels.
Activities

Support the actions of the National Comission of Biopiracy Prevention, through:

  • The organization of the Second Regional Workshop on Prevention of Biopiracy with the active participation of indigenous organizations.
  • The organization and coordination of a training workshop for officials from patent offices in the region, to discuss options and mechanisms to implement obligations on disclousure of origin, under the Peruvian and CAN legislation, as well as in Brazil, costa Rica and other countries.
  • The publication of at least six issues of the series: “Research Documents of the Andean Biopiracy Prevention Initiative”.
